Do 50 percent of marriages really end in divorce?

If you've gotten married and are considering a divorce, you may think that it was just a matter of time; after all, the news often claims that 50 percent of marriages end in divorce. If you're considering mediation or another method for your marriage or potential divorce, you may be interested to know that the statistic isn't entirely true.

According to data, the number of marriages reaching their 15th anniversaries are increasing; they have gone up from 65 percent of marriages in the 1970s and 80s to 70 percent for those who wed in 1990 or later.

People are also marrying later in life, and that has helped in reducing the number in divorces overall. In the 1950s, for instance, the average age when women married was 20. For men, it was 23. By 2004, the average age for getting married was 27 for men and 26 for women, showing that people want to wait longer and spend more time to find an appropriate partner.

If the numbers were to continue following this downward trend, it would be possible that only around a third of all marriage would end in divorce instead of closer to half. National trends have shown that divorce rates aren't expected to rise at all and that historical highs may have been a kind of anomaly rather than an omen for today's couples.

Regardless of the numbers, if your marriage is in trouble or you're considering divorce, you have the right to learn everything you can about divorcing and the process that will take place. With your Pennsylvania attorney, you can work through the paperwork and data collection needed to divorce, so you can move on with your life.
