Do nontraditional roles in the home increase the risk of divorce?

A recent study found that nontraditional roles in the home increased the chance of divorce. One newspaper asked several people why they thought this was. The answers were interesting.

One couple responded that they thought men helping around the house with chores and other tasks was the new normal. This, they thought, was because they believe that in this economy, it takes both parties in a marriage working to make it. In their home, the chores get done by whoever has the most time.

A widow said that during her decades-long marriage, she did more of the housework, with her husband doing 25 to 30 percent of it.

Another person said that the increase could be because men do the chores wrong. Another reader agreed, saying that the way a person was raised could have an influence. "I guess if you do have a female who grew up with her grandmother doing it a certain way and then she's trying to give her husband some tasks and he's just not doing it correctly, doing it sloppy, I can see nagging becoming an issue," the man said.

Then the newspaper wanted to know if traditional roles were a better idea? The widow said, "I can't imagine saying that, sorry I can't bring myself to do that so I hear why I maybe should but I guess I'd hope that people would work out better ways."

The study found that in most marriages (60 percent) the wife does somewhat more work than the husband. In 11 percent of marriages, the wife does all of the housework and in 4 percent of couples, the man does all of it. In about 25 percent of marriages, the household chores are split evenly.

The reasons people get divorced are numerous. When the decision to divorce is made and there has been a decision made about fault, it really doesn't matter why the divorce happened anymore -- at least to the court. It's more important to attempt an amicable divorce, especially if children are involved. It's better to focus on the divorce matters such as child custody, spousal support and property division than on whose fault the breakup was. An attorney can help you with these and other areas of divorce.
