Adoption: What to know as a single parent

As a young adult, you have always known that you want to have a family. Unfortunately, you don't have a partner, so there's no way for you to have one naturally without going through medical procedures to do so. Instead of doing that, you'd like to adopt, but you know that it could be more difficult since you're a single person.

The truth is that children need parents regardless of their ages or if they're single or married. What adoption agencies and Social Services want to see is a person who is dedicated to raising a child with love and compassion. They want to know you're financially stable for the benefit of the child, and they need to know that you're prepared to bring a child into a loving home.

Can single people adopt?

If you're considering adoption, don't be nervous because you're single. In 2013, around 28.2 percent of all adoptions involved single parents. It's not uncommon to want to adopt as a single person.

One thing that could become an issue is finances. You'll need to show that you can afford the adoption as well as afford to adopt and care for a child. The agencies want to see that you're financially stable now and if you add another person to your home. It sometimes can be hard to prove that you have enough money to do so, but with a plan for the future and good records, it's much easier to support your request to adopt.

What is a home study?

Before you can adopt, the agency will likely perform a home study. This is when someone comes to view your home and how you live there. It's a requirement that you have at least two bedrooms, so there is one for you and one for your adopted child. Primarily, the agent wants to see a clean, well-maintained household.

These are just a few things to consider about adoption. Be prepared to ask questions and learn more before you move forward with yours.
