A father plays an important role in a child's life

Fathers often think they are at a disadvantage when it comes to child custody issues. This isn't the case any longer. Courts now realize that with very few exceptions, such as abuse, children should get to know both parents and be able to have a meaningful relationship with them.

For fathers who are trying to make their case for child custody matters, there are several ways to boost the case for him to be able to keep an active part in his child's life. One of these is to continue to build a strong relationship with the child. This can include going to the child's events, such as school plays and activities, church events, parent-teacher conferences and similar meetings. This shows that the father wants to be a part of all aspects of his child's life and not just the things that are considered fun.

Another thing that fathers can do is to pay all support payments that the court requires. This includes keeping health insurance on the child if that is required. When payments can't be made as ordered due to an extraordinary circumstance that is likely to continue, such as the loss of a job, the father can file for a modification of support to address the issues.

Fathers should also think realistically about what they can do. There is a chance that raising a child will be more involved and more difficult than the man realizes. This can be difficult, but thinking about how to overcome the challenges early in the process can help to make everything a little less stressful.
