Divorce isn't going to be a quick process

A marriage usually doesn't implode overnight. It takes a good while for a marriage to break down, just as the divorce to legally dissolve the marriage takes awhile to unfold.

It's important that you remember this when you decide to file the paperwork to start the process. There are several factors that affect how long it takes to resolve the matter.

Pennsylvania has a 90-day cooling off period for divorce

The clock doesn't start ticking until the non-filing party has been officially notified of the filing. This means that in general you will have to wait at least 90 days in order to move forward with the split, depending on how long you have already been separated.

Another issue that can lead to a longer time between filing and the finalization is the property division process. You and your ex need to agree on who will get what if you are going to handle the divorce quickly. Without an agreement, there is a good chance that you will need to litigate these matters, which can add a considerable amount of time to the divorce process.

You also have to determine what is going to happen with the children and with support payments. These are areas that can also be determined through negotiations. It is almost always better to remember that compromise is the key when you are trying to get these matters worked out.

Even though it won't impact the amount of time it takes to get the divorce finalized, you should prepare for the emotional impact of the divorce. The challenges that you face in this area might outlast the legal process.
