People who work in daycare facilities face specific risks when it comes to their health and safety. It’s critical to reduce the likelihood that they suffer injuries while working. They face some of the same risks as people in other industries, but there are also some unique risks for these jobs.

Interacting with children
Try to kneel or stoop down when you are dealing with children. It is tempting to bend over when you deal with the little ones, but bending over puts a strain on your back. Over time, this can lead to lower back pain and cumulative trauma injuries. When you are standing up and walking around, you should use proper posture. If you must pick a child up, lift with your knees, not your back. If you are working with babies, try to use a stepstool when picking them up out of a crib instead of overstretching to get them.
Trip and slip hazards
Small furniture, toys strewn about the floors and spills are common in daycare settings. Workers must be mindful about what is going on when they are moving about. Sometimes, you might have to carry something, such as a child, that might obstruct your view. You should be extra careful when you have to do this because you might not be able to see things on the floor.
Outdoor safety
One of the most important things for you to do if you are outside with the children is to wear sunscreen so that you are protected from UV rays. Try to take breaks from being out in the sun by going into shaded areas periodically. Additionally, drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration.
Illnesses and infestations
Children don’t know how to help control germs. Be sure to wash your hands frequently, especially after diaper changes and helping children when they blow their nose. You should also be vigilant about watching for signs of lice infestation. The daycare should have a policy against parents dropping off sick or infested children.
Just like other employers, daycares need to have workers’ compensation coverage for their workers. This provides workers with a safety net if they are injured during their shift.
