When you’re climbing a ladder, there’s a high risk of injury. Even a fall on the same level could cause a serious injury, and a fall from height absolutely can. Many of these falls are fatal.
As a worker, it’s important to know how to protect yourself. This starts with knowing what actions to avoid. With that in mind, here are four things you should never do.
1. Stand on the top rung
If something is out of reach, you need to get a taller ladder. Do not climb up to the top rung, where you have no support and could easily lose your balance.
2. Lean from the top of the ladder
Similarly, if something is out of reach to the side, it’s best to climb down and move the ladder. Don’t lean, which could cause the ladder to tip or you to fall.
3. Try to “walk” the ladder
In some cases, people who need to move a ladder a small distance will attempt to “walk” it to the side while still on it. But this is incredibly dangerous, especially because there’s no telling if the new surface is stable for the ladder.
4. Climb in a rush
Every time you climb the ladder, you should be careful and focused. You should always maintain three points of contact. Do not rush or hurry up the ladder, as this could put you and others at risk.
