Back injuries might be preventable

Back pain can impact your ability to do anything at all. Even the simplest of tasks, such as getting dressed, might be excruciating when you have something wrong with your back. This is why it is imperative for a worker to take care of his or her spine while working. There are several ways to do this, so here are a few to think about.

One way that you can protect your back is to stretch before you start working. This is important for all workers, not just those who have physically demanding jobs. By stretching, you are warming up the muscles for your activities. You might only have to sit at your desk all day, but this can lead to backaches. Take precautionary measures early to avoid potential problems later.

Another way to prevent injuries is to use proper lifting techniques. You should lift with your knees and not with your back. Bulky or heavy items should be picked up by more than one person. You should use assistive devices when possible. Also, if you already have something amiss with your back, don’t try to push it by picking up heavy items at work.

You can also prevent back problems by sitting and standing up straight. Good posture keeps some of the pressure off the back and can help you avoid issues in the future. Even when it isn’t easy, practice correcting your posture. Over time, it gets easier to keep your spinal column in the correct position.

If you do suffer from a back injury at work, get medical care. Don’t assume that you can keep working. Your safety and health must be priorities while you are working.
